Cleaning silver is not about aggressive polishing, but about using the right method for the right level of tarnish.

 

Light Cleaning (Routine Maintenance)

For everyday care, a silver polishing cloth is the safest and easiest option. Gently rub in straight lines rather than circular motions to avoid micro-scratches.

 

Gentle Deep Cleaning

For more noticeable buildup:

  • Mix warm water with mild soap

  • Soak the jewelry briefly

  • Use a soft brush to clean details

  • Rinse thoroughly and dry completely

This method removes dirt and oils without damaging the surface.

 

Removing Tarnish

For moderate tarnish, a baking soda paste can be applied gently and rinsed off after cleaning.

 

What to Avoid

Not all “DIY hacks” are safe. Avoid:

  • Toothpaste or abrasive materials (they scratch silver)

  • Bleach or ammonia (they damage the alloy)

  • Over-polishing oxidized designs, which removes intentional dark details

For detailed or stone-set pieces, gentler methods are always preferred.
